Office Pilates–Wrist Rolls

We live in a world of technology, so I’m going to assume many of us need to use a computer at some point in the day. We may not realize but this can be a challenge for our muscles and joints. Before sitting down at the computer, at the end of your day, or right now as a break try to give your wrists a little attention.

Roll them in circles, gently bend them forward and backward, wiggle your fingers. Do what feels good to loosen your wrists. It can be a tough world out there for the parts of our our body we don’t think of very often, but we have the ability to make it a little easier on them (and ultimately ourselves).

Office Pilates–Heel Lifts

Our ankles don’t get much attention throughout the day, but if we stand up all day, they work awfully hard. Consider paying them some much needed attention.

You can do this exercise standing or seated. If you stand all day at the office, I suggesting sitting down and straightening your legs out in front of you so that they are parallel to the floor. If you sit all day, stand up near a wall to help you balance.

Here’s are three different ways to move your ankles:

  • Point and flex your feet. If you are standing, when you point your foot, you might find it a challenge to balance so hold onto the wall.
  • Circle your ankles in one direction. If you are standing do one leg at a time.
  • Move your ankles from side to side. This will not be a big range of motion. If you are standing you should also do this one leg at a time.

Office Pilates–Goodies Abound

Working in an office can bring your healthy lifestyle to a halt, especially around the holiday season when coworkers bring in treats. You’ll have plenty of time to snack and try Christmas cookies all month long, but pick one week this month were you won’t have any office snacks. The week before Christmas will probably have the most, so if you’re brave attempt to skip out that week. Or, if you know you won’t commit, skip an earlier week. Know your willpower is strong? Try not to snack at the office all month long.

Actually put NO SNACKS on your daily calendar to remind yourself that you are going to keep your hand out the of the cookie jar for one week–at least at the office.

Office Pilates–Think Posture

Okay, right now whatever you are doing, stop and think about your posture. Can you correct it and still do you job? Without thinking have you begun to slouch? For the rest of today, try to maintain good posture.

Get used to thinking about it and train your body to do it naturally. Like anything, if you practice it will get easier.

Whether you sit or stand, think of holding your head high, pulling your belly button in, keeping your shoulders back and down. Think tall. Think control.

Try not to let the workday destroy your posture and muscles. You are in control of your body.

Office Pilates–Take a Break

Sometimes a good old fashion break is all you need to revitalize yourself. Today think about what you like to do to get away from the piles on your desk. Do whatever you need–go visit a colleague for a 5 minute chat, just fill up your water bottle or coffee mug, step outside for a moment, stand up and stretch.

Do what you like to do. Sometimes the very smallest break can rejuvenate you. Today, you pick, but try it now!
