Five Exercises You Should Do Every Day
People often ask me, "What's the best exercise?" For me, that's like asking someone to pick a favorite child. (I don't have kids, so instead I have exercises I love.)
Years ago, when Matt had a slipped disc, he asked me what five exercises he should do every day to fix it. The body doesn't quite work that way, but I met him where he was and chose five exercises that addressed what his body needed most. He found it helpful.
Sometimes having something that feels manageable is exactly what we need to build a habit and consistently give our body what it needs.
These exercises aren't designed specifically for back pain. They're simply five moves that cover many of the body's essential movement patterns while helping counteract the effects of a typical day of sitting, standing, and repetitive movement.
So, here goes.
(Don't tell the other exercises I said this.)
Shoulder Bridge — 1 minute
Side Plank/Clam Combo — 30–45 seconds each side
Plank — 30–60 seconds
Flies — 30–45 seconds
Heel Bounces or Hops — 30–60 seconds
The whole routine takes about five minutes or less.
Can you commit to doing it every day for the next month?
And I reserve the right to change my mind.
