Make Time to Move

As spring rolls in, I wish everyone would commit to moving more, but it can be a challenge. One of the most common reasons I hear people don’t move more is because they don’t have time. So here are a few tips to help you fit movement into your daily routine.

Of course, you’ve probably heard the advice to park far away at any store and take the stairs vs the escalator/elevator. If you aren’t already doing that, do that for sure, but here’s more:

Wake Up: Wiggle & Wave

Get up and sway. Wave your arms overhead. Sway and wiggle your body. Movement doesn’t have to be regimented, you can move in a freestyle pattern. But basically warm up for the day.

Teeth Brushing: Toe Lifts

Before you cram your feet into shoes for the day, lift your toes up and down. It’s a really good exercise for arch support and almost impossible to do wrong. Plus, if you do wear shoes, you’ll want to make time to move those tootsies.

What is fascia?

This month we are highlighting fascia.  Fascia is the connective tissue that runs along every surface of the body, encasing the organs, muscles, and other soft tissue like a sausage casing or the sections of an orange—where each large and tiny segment of juice is held together by a sleek, thin film.  So the muscles themselves are encased, but so is each muscle fiber.  Fascia is everywhere in our body. There are different types of fascia in your body that serve different purposes.

Fascia helps us move.  It helps make us glide so that when we move our skin, tendons, and muscles don’t stick to all our other parts.  Each part can slither smoothly alongside each other.  Fascia can help the muscles do their job.  When healthy fascia remains springy (for lack of a better word) in movement, the muscles can use less energy and won’t fatigue as quickly because the fascia takes some of the burden of force and helps the body return to its “normal” shape.  Fascia is your friend for all kinds of movement.

Sure, your abs might be a part of the problem. They may need to get stronger to do the exercise, but they also might just need to learn how to fire properly—meaning they could do it if they understood what they were supposed to do. Most of us weren’t taught how to do a sit up or ab exercises properly. Many of us use other muscles like hip flexors or the muscles in the neck to try to pull ourselves up to a seated position.
