Exercise of the Week–Head Nods

The holidays are almost upon us, and that means you might be getting a kink in your neck from lifting and carrying gifts from the mall to the car, or from looking down at your keyboard as you order your gifts off Amazon. Perhaps we can counteract some of the strain in those muscle by paying them a little attention.

You can also make time for this exercise while standing in line for something. Then you’ll be killing two birds with one stone and being productive while in line.

Here’s how:

  • Stand or sit with your belly button pulled toward your spine. Look straight ahead.
  • Tilt your right ear toward your right shoulder and hold for three deep breaths.
  • Tilt your left ear toward your left shoulder and hold for three deep breaths.
  • Look straight ahead.
  • Tilt your chin toward your chest (without cramming your chin into your chest–try to keep a gap the size of a baby’s fist between your chin and chest) and hold for three deep breaths.
  • Lift your chin away from your chest until your gaze hits the place where the ceiling meets the wall. Hold for three deep breaths.
  • Look straight ahead.
  • Turn your head to look to the right and then drop your chin toward your shoulder. You should feel a stretch through the opposite side of the back of your neck. Hold for three deep breaths.
  • Turn your head to look to the left and then drop your chin toward your shoulder. Hold for three deep breaths.
  • If your neck doesn’t feel tension free, repeat all three movements again.

Always work to a level were you feel a stretch, not a strain. This is your neck. It’s very sensitive, so take your time and move slowly.

Thank you for giving your time to stop and read my blog. I hope it encourages you to keep moving. Move and the body will be happier. And when you're moving you can hike, run, swim in Jell-O, race over non-Newtonian fluids, travel the world or build igloos--if that's your thing. If not, you can watch me do it. This is just a spot to try and feel good about life.
