Earth Day Exercise

Today is a beautiful day to enjoy Earth Day. It’s a Tuesday so most people have to work, but now that the sun shines later in the day, there is more opportunity to enjoy it. Try to get out for a walk or a run. Locally, Old Wethersfield is a great location to walk. Walking around Wethersfield’s town green is 0.9 miles, practically a mile. So if you park on Main Street and walk to the green you can get in that full mile. Do as many loops as you want. Walk and talk with a friend until the sun sets.

On Earth Day we are meant to appreciate the Earth. That means trying to come up with ways we can treat the environment better, but it also means taking time to relish in the pleasures nature can provide. When we appreciate and use something we are more likely to treat it well (I hope). So get outside and take part in all the world has to offer.

Earth Day is the perfect day for exercise because there isn’t much you can do in the great outdoors that doesn’t get the body moving. Try finding and walking your own town green, go on one of the many great hikes Connecticut has to offer, work in your garden, go sit by a lake and read a book, take the kids out and try flying a kite, grab a ball and glove and have a pass, or wash the car. Some options are more mechanical, others are more relaxing, but they all get you outside to absorb a little vitamin D from the sun (although sun screen isn’t a bad idea), and most of them get you moving.

Then come home and try and turn the lights off earlier than usual or don’t turn on the tube. Try to save a little energy in gratitude for all the Earth provides.

We have such varied terrain and seasons here in Connecticut. Why not take advantage of this beautiful place we live?
